In the year 1854 East India Company suggested the Governor General of India to establish Bombay, Madras and Calcutta Universities and as a result of this, University of Calcutta was established in the year 1857 on the 24th of January. Initially, University of Calcutta adapted the pattern of University of London and slowly, but surely introduced changes to its constitution. In the year 2001, the university was awarded five star status by NAAC.
The achievements of this university has always been appreciable in the fields of literature, language and social sciences, while other departments like modern Indian languages or comparative philology, philosophy, history and economics have an established and long tradition. University of Calcutta is the first university to start a separate college for women in India in the year 1879 named Bethune College and the first homeopathy college in India is also set up by the university in the year 1880. Apart from these two firsts, the university has the pride of other firsts as well and they are first science college in India in the year 1914, first blind school in India in 1925, the first university to teach oriental and occidental history, Indian and European Philosophy and European classics located to the east of Suez. Moreover, the first management institute was started in the year 1953 in India under this university.
